Monthly Newsletter

In September, we observed National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Mental Health Matters of Middle Georgia wants to emphasize the importance of keeping this conversation going throughout the year. Suicide is a leading cause of death, with over 48,000 Americans dying by suicide in 2021, making it a critical public health issue. The recent introduction of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has made accessing help easier and more immediate. By dialing 988, anyone in crisis can quickly connect with trained counselors who are ready to provide support and direct individuals to local resources.

Community Wellness Spotlight: Monthly Insights on Mental Health and Substance Use

As the holiday season and new year approach, December and January bring unique challenges and opportunities for mental health and substance awareness. The stress of holiday obligations, financial strain, and heightened feelings of loneliness can contribute to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and exacerbate anxiety or depression. Additionally, holiday gatherings and celebrations often increase the risk of substance misuse, particularly alcohol, making it essential to raise awareness about moderation and coping strategies. January, often associated with resolutions, is a prime time to focus on building healthier habits and addressing substance use issues, such as beginning recovery journeys or seeking support. Communities should also be mindful of post-holiday fatigue, which can impact mental well-being, and take proactive steps to foster connection and resilience during these critical months.

Helpful Interventions & Coping Strategies

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health or substance, use during the holidays, here are interventions and coping strategies to help:

  • Set Realistic Expectations
Avoid striving for a "perfect" holiday. Focus on what you value most and let go of unnecessary pressure.
  • Practice Self-Care
Prioritize rest, relaxation, and hobbies you enjoy. Engage in mindfulness, exercise, and maintain healthy eating habits.
  • Stay Connected
Reach out to friends or family for emotional support, even if you can't be physically together. Virtual check-ins or calls can help combat loneliness.
  • Manage Financial Stress
Set a budget for holiday spending and stick to it. Consider meaningful but less expensive gifts or gestures.
  • Limit Alcohol and Substance Use
Avoid using alcohol or drugs to cope with emotions. Practice moderation and set personal limits when attending social events

Substance Use Interventions

  • Identify Triggers
Be aware of people, places, or events that might tempt you to use substances, and plan how to avoid or manage these situations.
  • Find Alternative Coping Mechanisms
Replace substance use with healthier stress-relief activities like exercise, talking to a friend, or engaging in a hobby.
  • Have a Support Plan
If you're in recovery, attend holiday events with a sober friend or bring your own non-alcoholic drinks. Know when and where to seek help if you're feeling vulnerable.
  • Reach Out for Professional Help
If you find yourself struggling with substance use, don't hesitate to seek professional support from a counselor, therapist, or substance use program.
